17. More Most !
Introduction
Approaching the end of the century, art development is no longer restricted
to any fixed form. Accordingly, the concept of museum has also departed from
the conventional form of institution. MOST (Museum Of Site) is by no means a
traditional form of museum. MOST is a "Conceptual Museum" where ideas are
fundamental and its visual counterpart a substantial element. It believes
that the cultural fabric of its site forms the base of exhibition and
collection. MOST, located at the renowned Kat Hing Wai (Kat Hing Walled
Village) in Kam Tin, will take the challenge to start a new page of Hong
Kong's art history.
Objective
MOST, located at a distance from the major cultural and art center in Hong
Kong, offers an alternative thinking space in the New Territories where a
participatory and interactive transmission of ideas among artists, educators
and public is made possible. The New Territories, particularly Yuen Long,
Kam Tin and Sheung Shui Old Town, has already fostered its unique heritage,
a strong sense of belonging, as well as its community and cultural identity.
Kat Hing Wai, at Kam Tin, itself is a protected historical site, and it
embraces the local culture and the recent Green Projects. The tension
between tradition and modern life is most obvious in and out of the village
wall, plus the ex-Gurkha camp serves as a post-colonialist landmark. All
these cultural signs found in Kat Hing Wai form a colourful and culturally
complex phenomena which worth reflecting and exploring. MOST encourages
experienced and experimental artists to review the heritage ideas,
vernacular cultures, as well as histories and folk stories of the New
Territories in the contemporary art forms.
Most occupies a three-level village house, an area about 3.000 sq. feet. The
museum consists of exhibition rooms, a media centre, a mini art library &
research archive and a ceramic workshop. It is hoped that with sponsorship
and supportive funding, MOST can set up its Art Education Centre to provide
slide duplication facilities, video and other media-related resources,
photocopying and scanning services as teaching aids in art education and
promotion.
